Spotlight on - Teaming Up to Help a Community in Need

Steve Meetre and Arlene Richter, Wyndham Worldwide Corporation
Lori Braender, Karen Raihofer, Ellen Knarr and Veronica Gonzalez, Day Pitney LLP

The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry serves the Bayshore, NJ community with emergency food, holiday food baskets and toys. The Pantry also assists in stabilizing the family unit and helping those individuals who have fallen through the cracks by helping locate other services for those in need.  The Pantry has worked diligently for several years to secure a location and funding to construct a much-needed new space for the Pantry, which has been operating out of churches and volunteers’ homes.  This past spring the Pantry received approval for HUD funding and requested assistance and advice during the bid process for a HUD-financed food pantry construction project.  Following Superstorm Sandy, the community, already under strained economic conditions, is now facing an even greater shortage of food and shelter.

Steve Meetre and Arlene Richter of Wyndham Worldwide Corporation volunteered to assist the Food Pantry and recruited Lori Braender, Karen Raihofer, Ellen Knarr and Veronica Gonzalez of Day Pitney LLP for their construction and corporate law expertise.  The complexity and scope of work involved in reviewing the HUD documents, preparing documents and interfacing with the government and other parties for the bidding and construction process required attorneys with many areas of expertise.

Isaiah Cooper, Executive Director of Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry, said, “The attorneys at Wyndham Worldwide and Day Pitney have been a great asset to this project.  They have demonstrated true professionalism, expertise and knowledge, and have provided us with hours of assistance to navigate the legal issues in this process.  We are grateful to have them on our team.”

Steve Meetre, Senior Vice President, Wyndham Worldwide, added, “assisting The Pantry in this significant project showcases the strong commitment of Wyndham Worldwide and Day Pitney to pro bono legal work and has been a rewarding experience for all of us. Day Pitney is to be especially commended for its tremendous effort and expertise on this matter. It has been a pleasure working with the Food Pantry executives and volunteers and we look forward to supporting the Food Pantry project through to completion.”
